Medical social workers (MSWs) of Pamela Youde Nethersole Eastern Hospital (PYNEH) provide timely psycho-social intervention to patients and their family and help them cope with problems arising from illness, trauma or disability. As a member of the clinical team, MSWs serve an important role in linking up the medical and social services to facilitate patients' recovery and rehabilitation in the community.
Scope of Service
Service Objectives
- To assist patients and carers with emotional or daily living problems arising from illness, trauma or disabilities.
- To facilitate patients to make the best use of the medical/ rehabilitation services offered by medical institutions and community partners.
- To assist patients’ rehabilitation in physical, medical and social aspect and encourage their reintegration into society.
- To promote and enhance health awareness among patients, carers and the community.
Key Services
- To counsel patients and carers with emotional stress or problems arising from illness, trauma or disabilities.
- To formulate discharge plan and conduct psychosocial assessment for patients, as well as refer patients and carers to receive rehabilitation services and community resources available in the society.
- To offer financial/ material assistance to the patients e.g. waiving of medical charges, application for trust fund, referral for social security benefits and purchase of medical appliance.
- To collaborate with medical and allied health professionals so that people in need could be identified and necessary treatments or rehabilitation services could be offered to them in a timely manner.
- To provide group counseling services and seminars for patients and families in similar situation.
