The Department of Radiology (DR) comprised a team of experienced staff which is dedicated to provide
high quality and comprehensive clinical radiology services for the management of our patients.
The filmless project, for plain X-rays, Ultrasound, Computed Tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) examinations, allows for readily accessible images in both outpatient and in-patient environments. In the past few years, it has already enhanced quality of care through timely patient management and collaboration between our department and other clinical specialties.
In the recent past, acquisition of new radiological equipment and technology in DR has helped provide better service for our patients. Notable additions include our 3 Tesla MRI scanner in 2019. Furthermore, there have been consistent developments and renewal projects over a wide scope of radiology subspecialties.
More significant additions include our angio-CT, enhancing our interventional procedures, digital breast tomosynthesis and contrast enhanced mammography.
DR values communication and collaborations with various clinical departments. Regular clinical-radiological meetings are held throughout the year to strengthen the communication network with clinicians. The recent addition of the Hybrid OT facilitates close collaboration with various clinical specialties, improving patient care.

Plain Film Radiography
This is the basic X-ray examination. X-ray is used to produce images of the body
such as the chest, abdomen, skull bone, spine or limbs. The acquired images are
useful in frontline clinical management.
Ultrasonography
Ultrasound is a high frequency sound wave beyond human’s audible range. It can
penetrate the skin and various tissues and is useful in producing clear images of
human organs. Ultrasonography can be used to examine different organs such as the
hepatobiliary system, urinary tract, pelvic organs, thyroid, breast and other
parts of the body. In general, ultrasonography is painless and harmless to human
body and radiation free.
Computed Tomography
Computed Tomography is a sophisticated imaging modality using X-ray and advanced
computer technology. It can provide clear images of various human organs and
diseases, which is particularly useful in the brain, head and neck, thorax,
abdomen and pelvis. Radiologists utilize the images obtained from CT to make
accurate diagnosis for the patients, which will help the clinicians to formulate
the optimal treatment plan.
The preparation required for CT examinations depends on the examined regions. Oral or intra-venous contrast medium may be given during the examination when required.

Angiography
Angiography is a radiological examination of the circulatory system which is
performed by injecting contrast medium directly into an artery or a vein. Patients
with suspected disorders related to the vascular system in specific organs or
areas of the body may require this type of examination for diagnostic purposes.
Interventional Radiology
Interventional radiology (IR) is a subspecialty in the field of radiology which
employs minimally invasive image-guided procedures to diagnose and treat diseases.
The procedures are often performed by a radiologist through small wounds under
X-ray, ultrasound or computer tomography guidance. Interventional radiology can
help provide patients with accurate diagnosis and timely and appropriate
management.
Mammography
Mammography is an X-ray examination of the breasts for the diagnosis of various
breast conditions including breast cancers. Often mammography and physical
examination of the breasts are complementary to each other; some cancers are found
by physical examination of the breasts and may not be seen on mammogram.
Fluoroscopy
Fluoroscopy is an imaging technique that employs X-ray and contrast medium to
obtain real-time images of internal organs. It is mainly used in the digestive
system; examples include barium swallow and meal, small bowel enema and barium
enema.
Magnetic Resonance Imaging
Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) employs strong superconducting magnets,
radiofrequency waves and computer systems to obtain images of the body. A large
part of our body is composed of water, which contains hydrogen atoms which are
slightly magnetic. By using a combination of magnetic fields and radiofrequency
waves, signals are obtained and then converted into detailed images of various
structures of the body.
MRI is safe, pain free and radiation free, and adverse effects are rarely encountered. However, not everyone is advised to have an MRI scan because of the effect of the strong magnetic field. Some patients with cardiac pacemakers, metallic fragments or metallic implants in the body may not be suitable for MRI scan.
There is no documented evidence of harmful effect of MRI on the developing human fetus throughout the pregnancy. Only a small number of animal studies have raised the possibility of teratogenic effects of MRI exposure in early pregnancy and the potential risk of acoustic damage to the fetus. If you think that you are pregnant on the date of the examination, please consult your clinical doctor for advice as soon as possible.

Operation Theatre Radiography & Fluoroscopy
This is a radiology service provided in the operation theatre. Portable X-ray
machines or C-arm machines are used for imaging during the operation procedure for
better surgical planning.
Portable Radiography
Portable radiography service uses a portable X-ray machine to take X-ray images of
patients in wards or operation theatres. However, due to technique constraints,
portable X-ray service can only offer basic plain film examinations for patients
who are not suitable to have the examination in the Radiology Department due to
their health and physical conditions.
